Microsofts new milestone - Windows Vista Glass Theme
Windows Vista, which was released during last January 2006, wrote a new chapter in the history, by introducing some exciting new series of features in it. One of them is Aero. Aero is a new feature of Windows Vista, in which windows are rendered translucent and in the 3D way. It is very similar to the most exciting features that we saw earlier in some of the 3D games.
Aero - Authentic, Energetic, Reflective and Open
Windows Aero was an acronym as “Authentic, Energetic, Reflective and Open”. Windows Aero is regarded as the most clean, innovative, most exciting user interface than the Windows LUNA which was used earlier in Windows XP. This interface includes new transparencies, live icons, live thumb nails, 3D look, animations and special effects such as eye candy effect.
Microsoft, for the first time, has revised everything, every components since the release of Windows 95 in 1995. It has changed design look for every component such as common controls such as buttons, radio buttons, task dialogs, various wizards, common dialog boxes, various control panels, various control panel elements, user notifications, fonts and the tone of the text used.
The system requirement for the Vista aero to run well is as given below.
- A 32-bit processor with the minimum speed of 1 GHz or a 64 bit processor,
- 1 GB of RAM,
- Direct 9.x compatible Graphics card with supporting Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) driver with 128 MB of video RAM,
- Free space of 15 GB in the hard disk,
Windows Vista home basic edition will not come with Aero. However, rest of all the editions of Windows Vista comes with aero feature.
Semi transparent window effect
The semi transparent window effect enables the user to view whatever there in the background, through the foreground window. This feature helps one to know what applications running at the background, while allowing the application to run at the foreground. For example, if you are running an MS Word window at the foreground, and you have another window opened at the background which is for Excel application, then one can easily make out that you are running Excel application at the foreground, without having to press a key. Presently, you were doing it via Alt+Tab even to view the applications running at the background screen. This effect is some times called as Glass effects.
Windows Vista Flip 3D
One of the most important features of aero is the Flip 3D. This effect will make windows something special. The effect according to me needs little time to load and processed and hence, there will be a black screen displayed before getting started, for a few seconds depending on the CPU speed, Hard Drive rotation speeds. This feature will show the windows in 3D spades. When one clicks on the window he wishes to see, or he presses Windows+Tab keys, the required window comes in an animated fashion to the foreground and the foreground window goes to background in an animated way. We can access the feature using Windows Key + Tab keys.
Windows Vista Flip 2D
Earlier, when we press ALT+Tab Keys, we got a list of application icons in a separate tray. In Windows Aero, we can directly see the preview of the application in the same separate tray instead of application’s icons. By using the highlighted preview, one can switch over to application, by releasing the already pressed ALT+Tab keys.
Live thumb nails
In Windows Vista Aero, another feature called as live thumb nails came into force. This feature enables one to preview the application, through a small window. One need to move the mouse near the minimised application at the task bar. A small window appears to us showing what does the application is doing right now.
Windows Vista Aero gives totally new feeling to its users. However, it does consume more resources than expected. Microsoft must focus on lessening the resource usage. Otherwise, one day, people need only server like systems to run future Windows. Let us, hope for the best, and be prepared for the worst.
