Windows Vista Drivers
Whether it is Laserjet printer or TFT LCD monitor, Windows Vista has the suitable driver. What is a Driver? The driver is a program which is
capable of handling a device in the computer. The functioning
of Windows Vista Driver is based on the same principle.
The basic devices that were detected by the BIOS startup
program are Basic keyboard, and the display, Floppy
Disk Drives and Hard Disk Drives. When there were only
four devices present inside a computer, there was no
need for drivers.
Limitations of BIOS
As technology started to grow, the number of new devices
also started increasing. The BIOS could not detect and
handle the new devices, because, the BIOS were prewritten.
The option left is to upgrade the BIOS or to write separate
programs to handle these new devices.
The device manufacturers, however, felt that, replacing
the BIOS is a complicated task, because BIOS program
is stored in ROM and secondly, some instructions added
could cause some more problems. So, they decided to
write separate programs to enable or disable the new
hardware. Such programs are called Device Drivers and
they are physically stored in Hard Disks or Floppy Disks,
and can be loaded into RAM.
The hardware manufacturer should provide a driver for
the device while purchasing the device. Otherwise, the
device will not get detected. Some manufacturers provide
the drivers in CD ROM disc, while others provide the
drivers in single or multiple floppy discs.
Windows Vista Installation
In Windows Family of operating systems, after adding
the new hardware to the system, one need to detect the
same through Add New Hardware Wizard, which is an option
available in the control panel. The Hardware will be
detected, and the wizard will prompt for the driver
software. When prompted, one need to select the driver
by selecting from the list of models provided or providing
the manufacturers disc and selecting "Have Disk"
option. If one selects model from list, then one need
to provide Windows installation Discs, when asked. Then,
the device driver is installed. Such devices are compatible
to the respective operating systems.
In windows vista the installation follows, as given
above. The device driver installation program may show
a dialog saying "Digital Signature Not Found"
Or "Device not compatible with Windows Vista"
and "Do you want to continue." Select yes
in the dialog. The driver will install correctly, but,
you will not get the features which were there in the
previously used operating system. The driver may behave
improperly. For example, if one installs windows 2000
drivers for a old printer, the print functionality may
work properly, but some of the functions may not be
available as specified in the manuals.
For all functionality to work, try to find the Windows
Vista compatible driver for the device. The manufacturer
may provide the upgraded version of the driver for that
device. However, for older devices the manufacturer
may not be able to provide the driver for the device.
In such case, one has no choice left, but, only to replace
the device itself. In such cases, purchase a device
which is compatible with Windows Vista.
To find the compatibility of the device, check for
a sticker, which says "Windows Vista compatible".
The devices worked with Windows XP may work in Vista
because Windows Vista is the improved version of Windows
XP. However, Microsoft has not yet released the list
of hardware requirements so far.
