Booting is a computer jargon to refer to the process of a computer starting up. The operating system gets prepared for use during this process, as the BIOS of the computer transfers the hardware control to the operating system in this stage. This happens as soon as the computer is switched ON, and is executed in a few seconds. The computer activates a program which is located at the Read Only Memory BIOS which executes the routines initially. The first sector in the hard disk contains Master Boot Record with instructions for loading the various components of the operating system.
Fast Vista booting process
While the earlier computer systems consumed a lot of time by way of booting, the Windows Vista booting process is much more faster. The Vista has a newly built boot loader with two parts. The first part is Firmware Independent Boot Configuration, while the second part is the Boot Configuration Data.
In earlier versions of Windows, one can notice a boot disk, also called a startup disk which was a floppy disk that contained the start up files. If the files in the hard disk are damaged, then the boot disk could be inserted and the Windows operated.
Operating systems of Windows 95 and Windows 98 used FAT or FAT32 file systems. In these circumstances the boot disk was particularly useful as it allowed access to the files on hard disk even if the Windows was unable to start.
Startup Repair and tools
In Windows Vista, the Startup Repair and tools in the System Recovery Options menu can be used to repair and restore the backup data. The Startup Repair is usually installed in the hard disk if only the computer manufacturer has pre installed the recovery options. If not, Startup Repair might have been customized or replaced. This information needs to checked out on the website of the manufacturer. In Vista, the installation along with the Startup Repair can be stored in a CD.
Vista boot manager
While in the computer system of yesteryears, Windows NT boot loader did the job of booting, in Windows Vista it is replaced by the Boot Manager which boots vista quicker than the older version of Windows.
Previous versions of Windows, from 98 to XP had a file called boot.ini to handle the computer’s bootup. Vista changes not only the user experience, but also brings a change to the booting parameters of the operating system. There is no more a boot.ini, and a Boot Manager takes over. Somehow, this boot manager is faster than ever, and Vista boots faster than any of the previous Windows versions.
Defragmentation process:
While in Windows the process of defragmentation helps to improve the speed of booting, the Windows Vista can be installed in any drive. This drive then becomes the boot drive. Due to the high security reasons Vista also does not allow to store files in C:.
