Windows Vista and higher, Is It Really User Frindly

Microsoft has stated that, on 30th June 2008, Windows XP, the 6 year operating system will be discontinued from production. This discontinuation will leave all existing XP users with only one choice, of course, to upgrade to a newer windows product, the Windows Vista. However, this decision has caused a lot of uproar among computer users across the world.

XP users do not want upgrade to Windows Vista

Majority of XP users do not want upgrade to Windows Vista for many reasons. The main reasons are,

  • 1. Additional Resources,
  • 2. Too boring and silly Incompatibility issues,
  • 3. Too slow in performance.
  • 4. New features with old concepts or vice versa,
  • 5. Cost.

For Windows Vista home basic to run, one must have a RAM of 512 MB minimum. One will not get real feel of the new operating system unless they go for Vista ultimate edition. Vista ultimate, on the other hand needs minimum of 1 GB RAM, which is too expensive. The computer system needs a minimum of 10 GB of hard disk free space, in case of vista ultimate with all features installed. One may have to change the computer system, if the system needs ultimate edition and the system does not support 1 GB RAM. Of course, this is not a major problem for one or two systems or for the companies. But, companies will end up in heavy losses if they upgrade that old system which has too low in the availability of resources.

avoiding vista developers

Avoiding software developers interest

Windows Vista will not allow programs which were developed under previous versions of Windows such as Windows XP, 98 etc. This one will irritate many, including developers. Of course, it is good to have newer things. Majority of people wants only older version of their software to run in Windows Vista. From the developer’s point of view, Microsoft seems to be throwing them onto roads. The developers might have developed their own products keeping in mind that Windows XP might not end too early. But, Microsoft is thinking in other direction. It is clear that, Microsoft is trying to attract younger generation more, by enhancing looks and all other things.

Slow loading

Some new and good features require more resources to run properly and smoothly, without causing delays to appear and all (Example, Windows Aero feature, which is available in Vista ultimate). The delay in appearing of an application window causes irritation among a large number of users. This delay is largely due to time it takes to load a component in the application. The main cause of delay is loading and reading too many files, while loading an application. For example, one application like MS Word needs several supportive files such as .DLL, .OCX, files to be loaded into the main memory before any activity on it can be performed. This hurts the user community, especially the new users, who expect their system to be fastest. And more over, added to this problem, there is a problem of security dialog in windows Vista. I am asking Microsoft, who cares, and bother about security dialogs and all. It is a waste of time and looks too old concept which says that “a program has asked permission to run, do you want to continue...” and so on. Which fool has asked Microsoft to give a message like this one; I am really fed up of this dialog. In fact, some times, I just get scared and start scratching my head, unknowingly what should I do (Should I continue or not, should I continue or not, and so on).

Less attractive user interface

The so called, less attractive user interface design of start menu, and especially the all programs menu has made users to feel that XP is better than Vista. The design at the All Programs menu is less attractive than the XP and more over the concept looks older than XP. Microsoft should have introduced back the XP style, at least by the time the service pack 1 came out. But, it remained as it is, which is a unfortunate thing that is happening in Microsoft, as its employees keep growing, day by day.

Regarding the cost, Microsoft has fixed the price, not according to the respective country’s market. Microsoft always does that, and keeps doing the same mistake over and over again. This of course, will irritate the users and users consider migrating to free licensed operating system such as Linux etc, which are more attractive than Windows series.

Time to think

By looking at this factors, its the duty of Microsoft to wake up and set right their own mistakes, than asking customers, users to correct their mistakes, by showing up a couple of error messages and advices. Now, already Microsoft has started digging its own grave. But, there is still enough time to wake up and correct. If it is not happening now, then, later things will be difficult, for a company, which dominated the computer world. For this, one ample fact available with Microsoft, that is its founder Mr. Bill Gates has come down the ladder of Forbe’s world’s richest persons list, to our surprise, that too within a year of Vista’s release. Let time decide everything.
