Windows Vista Will Be Profitable To IT Companies
Windows Vista, the generation next operating system
has developed by Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft has
released Microsoft Windows Vista along with other two
products (Office 2007, Exchange Server 2007) on November
30th 2006, to its U.S. business customers.
Who will get the profit?
The question now to be answered is, whether Windows
Vista system can bring profits to the company or not,
if upgraded from oldies of Windows. It is difficult
to answer this question at this stage. The debate has
already started.
Cost of licensing
For business users the cost of licensing is lesser
than what it costs to manage the OS and applications
running on their PC’s. Other expense of any IT
company includes payment of salaries to the employees.
Microsoft says that the various enhancements in Windows
Vista such as tightened security, more powerful installation
tools and improved management capabilities allow companies
to sharply cut the amount of time that is needed to
maintain the PC’s. This will lead to big savings.
However, the calculation of potential cost of savings
from upgrading to Vista would be difficult as the cost
for additional end user support will bring additional
burden to companies, according to a senior technological
advisor for Microsoft systems integrator.
Boost in automation, manageability will save time
Mr. Robert Taylor, CIO of the Fulton County government
in Georgia, said that "We manage 6,000 desktops
and 1,500 laptops, at $300 per PC per year that should
add up to $2 million in savings. The only way we could
actually save that would be to eliminate 30 people,
which we're not going to do." which means though
there are chances of getting reduction in the number
of staff members, there won’t be any affect in
this regard. However, he agreed that, the launch of
Windows Vista will enable one to boost automation, manageability
which frees up time for work at various projects. For
example, the beefed up image management services, which
will let the system administrators create personalized
clone backup of PC configurations and then electronically
re-install and all other applications, if needed. They
need not go to each systems where there is Vista installed,
if the computer is kept in different buildings.
User Access Control is one of the best features of
Windows Vista
According to Taylor, the User Access Control is one
of the best features that is available in Windows Vista.
User Access Control strips users of Administrator privilege.
The stripping of this privilege enables Vista to reduce
the spy ware problems substantially.
Intelligent management tools
Added to this, many companies use third-party components
and softwares for security and image management software
with Windows XP. Therefore, it will be better if the
companies upgrade Windows XP to Windows Vista, as Windows
Vista has got more intelligent management tools than
Windows XP.
Any new operating system requires some extra amount
of CPU speed, higher amount of RAM, higher amount of
HDD free space etc. Some systems may require replacement.
The systems which are intended to be Windows Vista systems
should pass minimum hardware requirement specified by
Microsoft. Failure to do so, Windows Vista will not
get installed. So, the companies need to invest or sellout
or spend more on these things before they could install
Windows Vista into the existing systems.
Reduced work load
Some think that, Windows Vista make significant changes
to working environment such as in the field of installation
and security and thus reducing the work load. That depends
upon the mind set of the person to person. But, the
Windows Vista operating system will enable one to make
use of some of the best features which is not found
in Windows XP or any other previous version of Windows,
along with the new set of features.
