Transferring files and settings in Windows Vista
According to English dictionaries, transferring refers
to the act of moving something from one place to another.
Computers store data in terms of files. Retrieval of
data is indirectly refers to as file transferring process.
During early days of computer technology, one was needed
to travel personally to transfer files from one computer
to another. People used to carry the required data in
dozens of floppies, copy them into the destination systems.
File transfers proved to be costlier during those days.
With the advent of networks file transfers became easier.
This also saved time taken to travel from place to place.
Today, in the age of networking and internet, there
are many advanced tools available to transfer file from
one place to another. Windows Vista, on the other hand,
defines a new dimension to file transfer by adding a
new feature to its existing new features list.
Windows Easy Transfer
Windows Easy Transfer is a step by step guide and transferring
tool for transferring files and as well as settings
of windows, from one system to another system. It helps
to choose what to transfer, such as user accounts, internet
favorites, email contacts from one computer to another.
It also helps one to select the method of file transfer
and performs the transfer for the user, automatically.
One can open the Windows Easy Transfer in Windows Vista,
by selecting path as, Start > All Programs > Accessories
> System tools > Windows Easy Transfer.
Apply old setting to the new system
As said above, Windows Easy Transfer will transfer
the files and settings from a old computer to a new
computer, there by enabling one to apply old setting
to the new system. Apart from transferring settings
such as user accounts, internet favorites, and email
contacts, one can transfer Program settings and Music,
Pictures, Videos etc. from Documents folder. One can
also choose additional files from other folders to transfer.
One can transfer settings such as colour schemes, desktop
backgrounds, network connections, screen savers, fonts,
network printer settings etc. from old computer to the
new one.
Same type of media on both computers
Depending on the media, one needs to select the transfer
method. One must have the same type of media on both
computers. For example, One cannot work with the Windows
Easy Transfer, if one has got CD-Writer in the new system
which is absent, or do not support in the old system.
Also, Windows Easy Transfer of Windows Vista will not
support floppy disks as a transfer medium. Devices such
as CD-Writers, DVD-Writers, External Hard disks, USB
flash drives, Easy transfer cable are among supported
devices. Transfer of files and setting is supported
through the network, if the two computers are connected
through networking. An easy transfer cable is a specially
designed USB cable, which can be connected to USB ports
on both the computers, provides a simplest way of file
and settings transfer from old computer to new computer.
It works fine with Windows 2000, XP operating systems,
except the starter edition of Windows XP.
The transfer speed largely depends on the computer’s
overall performance. If the computer speed is high and
good enough, the transfer finishes very quickly. Other
factor that influences speedy transfer is speed of the
device. If the device is slow and the computer is fast,
then one cannot get speedy transfer. Both the system
should have Windows Easy Transfer.
In order to perform file and settings transfer from
old system to new one, both the system should have Windows
Easy Transfer installed. The software can be copied
on to CD, or to a DVD or USB flash drive from the new
system. After copying the easy transfer software program,
one can copy the same in the old system and can perform
transfers. If one has got Easy Transfer cable, then
one can install the easy transfer software on both systems
using the CD before connecting the Easy transfer cable.
If both the systems run Windows Vista, then one need
not worry much on installing the software. The CD given
with the Easy transfer cable comes with the device drivers,
that detects the presence of cable connected to the
computer. After the installation of software and device
drivers, one is able to transfer the files and settings
from one computer to another.
One cannot transfer a program from old computer to
new computer. One can only transfer just the program
settings. One needs to install the program before making
use of the program in the new system where program settings
are transferred. Of course, the program makes use of
transferred settings and the user in turn, will feel
comfortable in using the program with his old settings.
The Windows Easy Transfer in Windows Vista enables
one to apply the old settings, if a user keep using
one particular computer, since a long time and wants
his settings to be in another, when the computer gets
changed. Overall, as the name suggest, the program manages
easy transfer of files and settings from one computer
to another, automatically, without causing much problems
for the user. |
