How to dual boot Vista & XP
The users who are used to Windows XP operating system do not want to shift to Vista all of a sudden. However, they want to try and test the Vista too. That means, they want both in one system. Here is a solution for it.
Making the partition first:
Your Windows current XP version can be upgraded to Windows Vista or you can choose to try dual booting configuration that will allow you to boot on your choice. Choosing dual boot configuration puts XP in one partition and Vista in another partition of your hard disk. If your hard disk has already partitions, you can choose one for XP and another for Vista. If you have already installed XP and there is no partition made in hard disk, you have to go for the partition first and then Vista be installed in that partition.

Once you decide to install Vista into your system besides the XP being installed, you need to make use of the tools meant for partitioning that comes with Vista. These tools can be accessed while setting up Vista from its bootable DVD.
Make sure of the size of the partition:
Be sure that the partition size of disk for Vista. It should be minimum 15GB. If you are going to install more programs for Vista, you need to pre-think the same and should dedicate that much more space accordingly.
Two ways to install:
XP being installed, you may install Vista in two ways. First way is – start installing Vista from within XP. Be sure that Vista should not perform an upgrade. Second way is – booting from Windows Vista bootable DVD. The second way is the preferred one.
Configure your BIOS:
Configure your BIOS to boot DVD drive first.
Follow the Vista set up guidelines while setting up:
Just like XP, the Vista, while getting installed, guides you through the set up instructions. You need to just follow those straight forward instructions. As it asks you to choose the partition where it needs to be installed, select that particular partition where you would like Vista be installed. Be sure whether you want to format the partition meant for Vista or not and accordingly select the options while getting Vista installed.
After completing the installation of Vista, your PC gets re-started and you will notice a Windows Boot Manager screen asking you to select your operating system. You need to select XP or Vista according to your choice and need within 30 seconds. Else the version already shown by default will run.
