In the development stages of Windows 95 and 98, Microsoft
kept releasing weekly updates of the Operating System
for its Beta testers. This upgrade type is now changed
into Community Technical Preview (CTP).
CTP or Beta Testing
Testing using CTP or Beta is usually done by technical
experts, beta testers. However, some companies give
out the copies of the product to some of the registered
users cum testers, so, that they too can test the product
for problems. Microsoft, besides Windows Vista beta
release, has been releasing the CTP’s probably
at the rate of one per month. These CTP’s contained
minor modifications to the executable programs, structure,
looks, security features etc.
The September 2005 CTP contained the number of modifications
to the Internet Explorer 7, modifications meant for
security, support for Media Center Vista and also for
Tablet PCs. It also included some of the popular new
games and various productive applications.
CTP with Windows Media Player 11
Later in the October 2005, Microsoft had released one
more CTP. This contained Media Player 11, a new version
of popular tool, the Windows Media Player. The new Media
Player, contained many features, and changed a major
part of Windows family of Operating System. This build
contained a new bundle of new tools required for performing
different tasks. The major features, apart from Media
Player, are, Windows Digital Gallery, Mobility Center,
and Network Center etc.
Internet Explorer 7.0 beta
This build also introduced some new features to the
Internet Explorer 7.0. Security was enhanced further.
Microsoft did not release CTP for the month of November
2005. Instead it held a conference for the beta testers
and announced that both November and December CTPs will
be delayed, will be released shortly before the year
end of 2005. The company told that the CTPs will contain
enhancement to the internal structure of the OS, modification
to security, and modification to the Internet Explorer
7.0.
The development of CTP’s on a regular basis will
enable one to test the product thoroughly, as it contains
less number of features, which can be tested easily,
without any difficulty. The problem for developers in
CTP’s is they should be able to solve the errors
quickly, as there is less time in between two CTP’s. |
