Getting The Best With Booting In Windows 7
Booting is a process of starting the Operating System. Whatever it may be earlier, but today, it includes loading files into memory, initializing system resources, making the device to respond, authenticate the valid user, construction of desktop and display and begin the applications.
Evolution of booting system in windows 7
Karen Wong, a program manager on the Core User Experience feature team, indicated that the evolution of booting system in windows 7 is similar to its predecessors. But it have the significant code changes that were introduced in Windows 7 for the new booting process which was made possible the new boot animation, which is similar to Windows XP having shown progress bar in the boot screen.
Window 7 makes the best use of 1024X768 resolution of screen
In Vista, the boot loader uses a low screen resolution of 640X480 Screen. But Window 7 makes the best use of 1024X768 resolution of screen. The file size required for the green animated progress bar is too low in Windows 7. Vista boot color screen has the low color depth which was of 16 bits per pixel. But in Windows 7, it has been increased into 32 bit per pixel, which increases the visual effect in the screen when booting is in progress. With the low resolution screen, limited color depth, Windows 7 will win the race on Vista, regarding booting process.
Windows 7 boot animation do not use the native graphics drivers
The Windows 7 animation is designed such that the operating system’s Kernel and some critical device drivers will loaded into the memory in the background. For this, Microsoft has brought out a new mechanism in Windows 7 boot loader. According to the Wong’s explanation, the Windows 7 boot animation do not use the native graphics drivers for the display, as there will be no device drivers gets loaded into memory or initialized at this point in the start-up process. Instead, the animation is rendered exclusively through CPU. He also said that the process involved updating the graphics display frame buffer, which optimizes the performance, uses caching technique in Windows 7.
The process of booting in earlier operating systems are of I/O bounded, which was loading the kernel, device driver files, and other system component files. But, in Windows 7 dimensions of the boot animation is limited to a small region on the screen, to avoid introducing any delay during the early stages of booting process. A larger animation area would require loading a larger set of animation images, which adds to the file I/O. The animation images are compressed by merging the bitmaps as resources, which are then compressed using WIM image compression technique. The WIM image compression reduces the overall file size, thereby reducing the I/O required to read them in. It can also reduce the on-disk footprint.
Reduction of transitions in the graphics mode
In another significant change, which improves not only the performance of boot, but the quality also, it is the reduction of transitions in the graphics mode, these transitions occurs during initialization of the graphics subsystem and Windows shell. In Vista, this causes the booting experience less smoother, as the display changes, goes into a blank screen a few times before displaying the user’s logon screen or the user’s desktop if there is only one system user. In addition to that Microsoft had adjusted a start up sound to come along with the booting process in Windows 7.
Windows 7 requires Less Booting Time compared to Vista
In all, Windows 7 also consumes less time compared to Windows Vista for the booting process to complete. Windows Vista takes a little long time than its predecessor Windows XP. But, Windows 7 takes less time than both predecessors. This makes Windows 7, almost a clear winner in the Operating System market. As windows 7’s ancestors had the dual booting facilities, this is been continued in windows 7 also. But comparatively to Vista and other windows families Windows 7 will stand at the first with its new features in booting process.
