Windows Vista Security Concerns
Windows Vista, the feature rich, more secured, more
reliable operating system, which is one among the Windows
Family operating systems, was released for only business
customers. Various security experts say that the operating
system is more secured than its predecessor Windows
XP and they too agree that the developers at Microsoft
paid much attention to security aspect, than other issues.
Jim Allchin, Co-President of Platform Products and
Services Group, a company that makes and sells antivirus
software, said that his seven year old son was able
to run locked-down version of Windows Vista, without
Antivirus Software. This shows that, how better Windows
Vista is, in terms of security. The statement of course,
irritated security vendors, who make and sell antivirus
product. Further more, this statement has rubbed salt
to the wound that is caused by Windows Vista's
Patch Guard Kernel protection systems. The vendor Sophos
took Allchin to task, it is said.
Windows Vista Security Problems & issues
The Sophos R&D members found that four Internet
Viruses and Worms named, Stratio.zip, Netsky.d, and
MyDoom.o were able to run themselves in Windows Vista
system. The researchers found that, the new email client,
Windows Mail client who replaces Outlook Express within
Windows Vista, is smart enough to recognize and stop
running these viruses and worms because, the client
is smart enough to be able to recognize double extensions,
an intelligent trick deployed by these mass mailers
while developing these viruses. However, these Malware's
gets executed whenever they get entry through third-party
clients such as Lotus Notes, Web-mail applications.
Sophos says that, the Windows Vista system is not foolproof,
hence it is required to invest additional amount into
Antivirus, Firewall, and other security protection.
Windows Vista security features
New defenses that are put up within
Windows Vista against buffer overflows will shutdown
some current methods of attacks; said
Oliver Friedrichs, the director at Symantec Security
Response. Repeating the same views, McAfee and other
vendors are predicting that, attackers will turn away
from creating operating system flaws and would return
to most traditional way of attacking if they need so.
Recently, there were fresh attacks over RealNetworks
streaming audio and adobe web products (Flash, Acrobat
Reader, and shockwave, they said.
It is said that, attackers will start focusing on other
operating systems too such as Macs. There was a report
published by the Symantec to justify the claim. The
Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD and its kernel is Darwin,
a Mach-based kernel. The Mac OF X imports and makes
use of functionalities of BSD and Mach and makes use
of security of both OS's, thus, resulting
in a security breach. Problems so far discovered in
MAC are, privilege escalation, client-side code execution,
and remote code execution.
Second Life, the online game, was infected by a worm.
The security experts say that, it is due to the money
(real as well as virtual) involved in these games. Experts
say that, the attackers will not get calm during 2007.
They keep trying to attack the system, which has got
Windows Vista installed. They will find some other ways
to attacking these systems, said experts. Any way, one
needs to wait, till 2007, the release date of Windows
Vista world wide, to watch what will happen next, in
terms of security.
